John Juanda – born to conquer destiny

Star is born

On 8th of July, 1971, John Juanda was born in Medan, Indonesia. He was reared by grandparents and yet took his father’s bad habits almost as inheritance. Blessed with gambling sense, he still managed to keep a cool head. They wanted him to become an MBA as he had acute business skills. He found his niche in selling bibles till he took on the flight to America for MBA studies.

Baptism

When the chance friend updated John about poker rules in the plane, something clicked in him. He knew that he would be better off with cards in his hands than the holy bible. While airborne, he sketched the plans for his future. He was baptized.

Between the lines

Between strenuous MBA studies, he trained steadily for poker on weekends. He would play it regularly online, with friends or even acquaintance. And then one day in 1996 he felt he could take on the professionals.

What was in store?

Based in California, he took on the might of eminent online players. Since then, he has never looked back. He has emerged victorious in three WSOP titles and numerous other championships. He has notched up more than six and a half million dollars in poker earnings. He has won everything worth winning in Poker except World Poker Tour where he lost very closely in the finals. Anyway, he is just 37.

His feature

He knows that it pays to be right in gambling; just action won’t do. He never stakes at a large pot if he does not have a big hand. He knows the probabilities and acts accordingly. His best feature is his absolute composure which resembles yet another wizard, this time from the game of chess, Gary Kasparov.

Even after huge achievements in the world renowned card game, he has managed to keep an extremely low profile. The only thing he likes flashing are the cards in hand.
